What Are Learning Disabilities?

Education

Learning disabilities are usually caused by physiological differences. Research has proven that brain function and structure are generally different in those with recognised learning disabilities. Although research indicates that learning disabilities can run in families, there are still a lot of misconceptions about thinking and learning differences and a wide spectrum of impacts on individuals.

The most common learning disability is language. People with language learning disabilities have difficulties with auditory and visual integration. They may also have speech problems. They may also have problems remembering words that they have learned and repeating back what they already know to themselves.

There are other types of learning disabilities that involve movement. The signs of these disorders vary and will usually show themselves in a child’s development, although not always immediately. Some other signs of dyslexia or other disorders include poor memory skills, gross motor movements, and eye-hand coordination.

If a person has a specific learning disability, it does not mean that they cannot function very well in most other situations. In fact, most people with this wide range of disorders can perform most of the basic functions usually associated with good health, such as reading, writing, cooking and caring for themselves.
