A little preparation before your fitting can save you time, reduce the risk of damage and allow for a neater result. Do this checklist the day before (and morning of) your appointment:
1) Confirm the details
Consider the arrival time, parking arrangements and whether your fitter is removing carpet then taking it away. If you’re unsure, ask. Much easier knowing what you plan for.
2) Clear the room properly
Remove small objects, toys and breakables from the room. If your doors follow through into the room where they are being fitted it is also worth emptying low cupboards before arrival. DIY or professional movers - Have you prepared a list of what furniture is staying and allowing your workers to know in advance that they will not be moving certain things?
3) Protect access routes
Fitters will have no choice but to struggle on through with their rolls of carpet and all the tools they need for completing those professional touches. Remove any clutter from hallways and stairs, picking up or moving anything that could get knocked over (photos, mirrors, vases of flowers, plants, lamps etc). 4) Sort pets and children
Pets should be locked in a different room and children out of the way. Curious paws or tiny feet paired with open doors, sharp tools and tack strips are a bad combination.
5) Look at the subfloor
The subfloor should be clean, dry and nail and staple-free. If you are removing flooring yourself, highlight any squeaks, damp patches and or uneven areas so that they can be addressed before fitting.
6) Plan for noise and dust
Fitting can be loud. Make sure to open a window if you can as dust particles are expected.
Last tip: just run through with the fitter quickly before they start so you both know what joins, door bars or sharp corners are on site.
