How to Make Better Use of the Space Inside Your Garage

Home

Garages were originally designed to protect vehicles, leaving not much space for anything else.  But, with garages not used so much for vehicle storage anymore, a little creative thinking can give you a more versatile space for relaxing, working or entertaining. You don’t need a major renovation to convert your garage into a usable living area. You might need a new garage door though. Begin by having a good clear out and reorganisation of the space to get a clear vision of how it can be used. Having a set place for all your items means you can find things easily and put them back when you’ve finished with them. Interior design experts recommend putting up some PVC piping to hold tools like brooms, shovels and rakes, as well as installing a rolling cart for cleaning products like bleach, sponges and spray paint. That way, you can grab whatever you need without going through boxes.

If you have an abundance of large tools and lawn equipment, install a system of pulley shelving to move items from upper shelves down to the garage floor, where you can use them. Smaller lawn equipment, such as a mower and weed whackers, can be hung from wall hooks to free up floor space.

If you plan to use the garage for working on projects year round, consider insulating the walls and adding drywall to prevent drafts. You can also insulate the garage door and add weather stripping to keep out moisture, dirt and insects.
